HBA expo

HBA expo (stands for Health and Beauty America) will take place from September 27 through September 29.

It's a great resource for packaging design (specially cosmetics) from all over the world, and you can get plenty of cool samples.

If you are interested, you must register ASAP because free passes are limited, after that I think it's about 60 dlls to gain access to the exhibit.

Go to www.hbaexpo.com click on register now and fill in the information.

Joshua Davis

I saw this guy speak recently at conference, and the general attitude was that he is a towering giant of modern design and that you have been living under a rock if you've never heard of him... ? Just curious if anyone else knows him/his work. He is apparently a pioneer of Flash.

His presentation was interesting, that's for sure. He creates elements of his final design in illustrator then throws them into a custom designed Flash generator that spits them back out at him in random patterns. He argues that this saves him valuable time having to compose a design himself, and that it always results in something unique and eyecatching, so... why not? Personally, I feel like this is cheating a bit, and that composition deserves a bit more thought, but... I dunno.

Anyway, if you haven't heard of him, apparently you are a loser. Sigh.

Semi-Permanent 05

Did anyone else attend the Semi-Permanent 05 conference this last weekend at Lincoln Center? It was... semi-interesting. The most important thing I learned was that most people can't give a presentation to save their lives, unfortunately. But despite their inability to explain coherently what it is that they are currently doing in the design world, the program and Semi-P website swear that the roster of speakers are all important to design and doing interesting things. ;) Worth a look. Would be curious to hear other opinions about the conference if anyone else attended...

How Modernism Got Its Curves

There is an interesting article on slate.com about designer Eva Zeisel, who is being awarded the National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement by the Cooper-Hewitt in October. A nice observation about design evolution and influence.
